In the 19th century, mathematicians like George Boole and Charles Babbage laid the groundwork for computing and logical reasoning.

The Birth of AI (1950s)

AI as a formal field began in the 1950s. In 1950, Alan Turing introduced the idea of machine intelligence through the famous Turing Test, which asked whether a machine could imitate human conversation convincingly.

In 1956, the term “Artificial Intelligence” was coined at the Dartmouth Conference, led by John McCarthy, Marvin Minsky, and others. This event marked the official birth of AI as a field of study.

Early AI research focused on symbolic reasoning and problem-solving. Programs like the Logic Theorist and General Problem Solver showed promise. However, limited computing power and unrealistic expectations led to slow progress. This period also saw the beginning of expert systems, designed to mimic decision-making by human experts.

The AI Winters (1970s–1990s)

As AI failed to deliver on big promises, funding and interest declined. These periods of low support became known as AI winters. Despite this, some progress was made in specialized areas like speech recognition and machine learning.

The Revival and Modern AI (2000s–Present)

The rise of big data, powerful processors, and advanced algorithms brought AI back to life in the 21st century. Machine learning and deep learning became central to AI, with neural networks powering breakthroughs in image recognition, natural language processing, and autonomous systems.

Landmarks include IBM’s Watson winning Jeopardy! (2011), Google’s AlphaGo defeating a Go champion (2016), and the rise of AI assistants like Siri, Alexa, and ChatGPT.
